The liberty given in the idols of the not – so liberal Indian society has always been a source of curiosity.
Two elements have been highlighted in the temples – women and sex. But why so, Why there are no idols of the gods worshiped in these Temples except Lord Shiva. (There is a separate Temple for Lord Shiva in Khajuraho Temples). Some say these sensuous posturing idols are in fact Tantric Images (Black Magic), pertaining to the fact that they are not limited to Khajuraho. As per this Cult, gratification of the basic instincts is one way to transcend the evils of the world and thus achieve Enlightenment. Bhoga (Physical enjoyment) and Yoga (Spiritual enjoyment) – both are seen as equally valid in the Quest for Nirvana or Moksha. For most of the people, the carvings in the Khajuraho Temple are seen as Joyous celebration of Life.
There are three Groups of Temple in totality – the Western, Southern and Northern Group of Temples. Khajuraho Temples follow a fairly consistent and unique design Pattern of a three or five part layout.
The Entrance Porch or the Ardhamandapa leads to the Mandapa – Initial Hall and from here to the Mahamandapa – the main hall. The main hall is supported by pillars and a corridor. An antarala (vestibule) then leads to the Garbhagraha (enclosed sanctum) where the idol of the Deity is displayed. A pradakshina ( enclosed corridor) runs around this sanctum.
In the outside corridors there are waves of higher and higher Urusringas (towers). There are the Shikharas (spire) toppings which are taller than the mahamandap. The whole of temple sits on a Adisthana (high terrace). With most of the temple aligned from east to west, these make a spectacular entrance.
